The Flecktones + BASSOON?! I just can't even... This concert is so funky it hurts. You definitely need to check this out. All of my bassoon playing friends need to learn how to play like this! Also, banjo might be one of the coolest instruments. Ever.
Some awesome music is happening in Denton. Tyler Mire's new CD just arrived in the mail as a reward for backing his kickstarter project. It is some pretty great charts and the band is really burnin. BUY IT.
I have been listening to quite a bit of Eighth Blackbird recently and really dig what they are doing. I particularly liked this track by Dennis DeSantis on their album Strange Imaginary Animals, which won two Grammy awards! Definitely check it out!

July 4th in NYC

Earlier this month I took a road trip from the Mini-Apple to the Big Apple with some friends to see sights and celebrate America's birthday. In addition to seeing one of the largest firework displays in the country, I got to finally go to the MoMA, which was probably the highlight of the trip for me. As a lover of art, I wanted to share some awesome pieces I got to see, as well as some other neat pictures I took!

On the evening of July 4th, we went to watch the firework show over the Hudson River where there were multiple barges shooting off the fireworks. Although the show was fantastic (and definitely the largest I have seen), there were almost too many people standing shoulder to shoulder for me to enjoy myself.

Turns out NY is not that big, as we ran into Chris Reza by chance in Times Square right after he got out of playing a gig. What are the odds of that?! Be sure to listen to the piece he wrote for AVIDduo here.

"The Rope Dancer Accompanies Herself With Her Shadows" by Man Ray

Although I was slightly disappointed with the surrealist works on view, they did have a decent collection of Rene Magritte pieces that were just fantastic. There was also a room completely dedicated to the DADA movement, which was particularly interesting to me. The Schwitters and Man Ray pieces above are of that movement. In fact, I have performed Schwitters' Ursonate on several occasions, so it was very interesting to see some of his material art on view. The main exhibition at MoMA during my visit was the work of Claes Oldenburg. There were several exhibits containing works from his various periods, including a giant mouse head with hundreds of tiny knick-knacks on display as well as giant, stuffed fabric foods. I did not particularly like most of his stuff, with the exception of his early work which was collectively called "The Street." I was not allowed to take any pictures of those works, but I snagged some that I liked off the MoMA website.

Here are a couple other pictures I took from around the city! All around, it was an enjoyable trip, including going to Chicago and Philly, but I am definitely glad to be back in Minneapolis!

Just a few weeks ago, EunHye Grace Choi met me in Minneapolis, MN for an intense week of rehearsals and recording for our upcoming CD. The project was to record four sonatas by American composers. The title track will be David Biedenbender's Images, along with sonatas by William Albright, Sy Brandon, and Jennifer Higdon and will be on the Emeritus recording label. Thanks to our great engineer Mike Duffy, we got some really great material that should be ready very soon!
The final product should be completely finished and ready for purchase by the Fall. Stay tuned!
