It has been a while since I've posted a "What Are You Listening To?" so I thought I would share a few things that are on my playlist currently. All three of these artists below have been a big inspiration to me lately, and I am completely digging their music! Give their stuff a listen, and if you dig it too, support them!
Last weekend, I visited Tennessee Tech University and University of Tennessee - Knoxville with the lovely EunHye Grace Choi. It was a joy to be in Tennessee, to perform, and to teach the talented students there. Many thanks to Phil Barham and Allison Adams for having us out!
I traveled to San Antonio, TX recently to attend the 2014 Texas Music Educators' Association Convention. It was a fantastic time spent catching up with friends and enjoying Mexican food on the Riverwalk in gorgeous 70 degree weather. I had an absolute blast and am so thankful to the many people that attended my session Start your beginner saxophones... the RIGHT way! If you were not able to make it or you did not get a handout please email me and I will be happy to pass one along to you!
I was happy to be back at the University of North Texas recently to play a recital with my friend Alex Richards of all saxophone duos (and one trio with piano)! Below are some pictures from the concert and the hang afterward. Thanks to everyone who came despite the icy weather, and be sure to check out the recording of Frederick Fox's piece Visitations below from the concert. Orotund2 will be playing that piece again at the NASA conference later this month, along with Jeremy L. Wagner's ...auf einer grunen Aue... You can also follow us on SoundCloud now! Recently, AVIDduo released our new album Interactions at a concert in Denton, TX. The program included all original works written for our duo by Anna E. Garman, Ted Moore, Mark Oliveiro, Kirk O'Riordan, Chris Reza, and a world premiere of a new piece by Sam Melnick. We were fortunate to have Jeremy Powell Photography there to take some pictures - which will be available shortly - but please enjoy a few shots of the event below in the meantime. To support AVIDduo, visit the Buy page for merchandise! Interactions is also available on iTunes and Amazon!
I made this work re(k)nub (2014) in response to James Turrell's Sky Pesher exhibit at the Walker Art Center. The photo was taken inside the enclosure on a very cold, snowy day and the audio is from field recordings on my iPhone while there. I liked the acoustics while inside, so I made various sounds and then took only the resonance/reverb and manipulated that. I was struck by how haunting and beautiful the enclosure was completely covered in snow and devoid of human activity - a completely different experience from visiting during a warmer time of the year. I hope you enjoy!
I'm very pleased to announce that I am joining the roster of Yamaha Performing Artists! I have played Yamaha saxophones for the past 15 years and think there is not a better of line of instruments on the market today. Yamaha makes one of the best student instruments money can buy, and their professional Custom line of saxophones are unparalleled in terms of intonation, projection, and quality of sound. I could not be happier to be joining a wonderful company and group of artists!
